Laurel & Hector Lee Mathews recently celebrated 16 years of her eponymous label. The designer, who was born in Northern Ireland but raised in New Zealand and Canada before settling in Australia, started out as an art director and illustrator on magazines such as Vogue andVogue Living. She then spent time working as a designer at a couple of other labels before going out on her own in 2000.
Lee Mathew's design philosophy is simple: "I create things I could never buy, that I will have for a long time, lovely but not fashionable, primarily in silks and cottons." She dyes her own fabrics and trawls markets for vintage pieces that become an inspiration for her prints. Nothing is wasted: leftover fabric is recycled into quilts by local Newport women and sold through her stores. Designs such as a simple mesh cardigan or smock dress will be repeated in new colours each season. |
